Also, Juliette talked to NME about the demise of The Licks and the evolution of The New Romantiques at SXSW 2009 in Austin. “The thing with The Licks was that I was always trying to keep it on the road,” she said. “Making records was secondary, so even the records we made, they were okay, but they were always better as a live band. So this is the first time I wanted to really take my time, and the only thing is the music has to be fueled by crazy passion and inspiration. If other people around you don’t have that, I can’t try to inspire everybody, that’s not my job. My job is just to be a songwriter.” Watch the interview below.

Rolling Stone’s Saturday afternoon showcase at Peckerheads went from a sweaty affair to a sweltering one as singer-actress Juliette Lewis hit the stage with her new band, the New Romantiques, to run through material from her upcoming disc, Terra Incognita. As Lewis told RS backstage, she wanted to step out from behind the power riffs of her previous band, the Licks, and embrace a sound where guitars were more of an atmospheric backdrop for songs teaming with raw emotion. (The Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez-Lopez became her collaborator after the two met at a festival and talked Fellini films). “Holy shit, I feel like we’re in my living room,” she exclaimed after ending her opening song, “Romeo,” a dark and mysterious number, with a piercingly epic note. “In the closet of my soul.”

Lewis stalked the front of the stage in sequined stockings and a beaded black dress adorned with feathered wings on her shoulders, her eyes closing as she fell into a trancey zone. She busted out a gut-wrenching blues song (”Hard-Loving Woman”), and concluded with the David Bowie-esque “Suicide Divebombers,” which swirled around the refrain “The past is dead.” After showing off how her elastic voice can stretch to accommodate songs that conjure Patti Smith and PJ Harvey, Lewis may just be leaving any preconceived notions about how seriously she takes her music in the past, too.

Earlier Canadians King Khan the Shrines hit the stage with their always-unpredictable soul-garage revue. Frontman Khan emerged from the crowd, escorted by a pom-pom waving colleague, and instantly broke into a sweat, shrieking and strutting like James Brown crossed with Jim Belushi. Organs twirled, sax blasted and a rogue audience member slapped a tambourine on his side as every member of the big band grinned and grooved. “This next song is about being on welfare,” Khan said, introducing a tune with a surprisingly upbeat “sha la la la la” chorus. He broke out his gold cape and an evil laugh, ending the too-short set with an appropriately dramatic flourish.

Juliette Lewis has revealed her latest musical endeavor, dubbed Juliette and the New Romantiques.

Lewis and her newly minted crew will kick off a string of live festival gigs with a performance March 18 at this year’s SXSW in Austin, TX, followed by a stop at San Diego’s IndieFest V March 28 before heading off for a two-night stand June 5-6 at Germany’s Rock Am Ring Festival. Itinerary details are below.

The actress and rock frontwoman–who in mid-January ended her seven-year run with her previous band, The Licks–also announced that an impending album, “Terra Incognita,” is in the pipeline, which new group’s MySpace page listed only as “coming soon.”

The songstress commented on her MySpace blog, “This new incarnation is more about disillusionment and hope. Determination and despair. Romance and tragedy. And truly creating music that comes from those conflicts. It is more about a sound and energy than a ‘band’.”

Forget The Licks – actress/rocker Juliette Lewis’ new sidekicks are called the New Romantiques.

After announcing in mid-January on Juliette and The Licks’ MySpace page blog that the “Licks are no more. It is the end of our run … For now,” this week Lewis announced the new band’s name, along with new shows and a new Web page.

Lewis explained her new album, Terra Incognita, which is set for release this spring and was produced by Mars Volta guitarist Omar Rodriguez Lopez, called for a new name for her band.

“Because this album is so sonically different than anything I’ve done before and captures many flavors of my emotional life and voice, it needed an entirely new name,” she said of Juliette and the New Romantiques.

Show ▼

Lewis wrote most of the 11 tracks on the new album – which the blog post notes is “coming soon” – along with her friend guitarist Chris Watson. Rich Costey, who has worked with Nine Inch Nails and Muse, mixed the LP.

Lewis, who made an appearance at Pollstar’s 2007 Concert Industry Awards show as one of the presenters, described Terra Incognita as “my version of whatever soul is.” She goes on to say, “I let the haunted woman come through – the tormented blues soul singer – as well as my full-throttle rock voice.”

Later this month Lewis and her band have plans to show off the new tunes by playing this year’s South by Southwest Festival at Emo’s in Austin, Texas, March 18 as well as a spot at San Diego IndieFest at North Park in San Diego, March 28.

In June the band heads for Germany to perform in the Rock & Ring AM Festival at Nurburg Ring in Nurburg June 5-6.

Lewis wrapped up her blog post by saying:

“Terra Incognita means unknown territory and I wanted – needed – to go there. Not everybody wants to. But I got no one to answer to, so why not feed the muse? It’s all about this love of expression and an audience who’s willing to take the journey into my mythical sonic forest of dreams, where romance and tragedy are next to heaven.”
